The growing trend of weight watching has affected the wine industry. Research is being done to create an increasing demand of low-alcohol and low-calorie wines. New Zealand wants to be part of this growing trend and the $17 million project behind this research hopes to put their “lifestyle’ wines to be voted as among the best in the world. NZ Winegrowers chief executive Phillip Gregan said that the research indicates that an increasing proportion of consumers are making purchasing decisions around their lifestyle, such as choosing healthier foods and lower-alcohol wines. The biggest challenge for wine growers is that they would not want to give NZ a bad name just because of the modified wine. Participating wineries include Villa Maria, Mt Difficulty, Giesen Estate and Accolade Wines which distributes brands like Waipara Hills.
