Food Manufacturers Tackle Food Wastage Problems In 2013, food wastage amounted to 796,000 tonnes, working out to approximately 147kg wastage per person. The Singapore Food Manufacturers' Association (SFMA) is looking at developing a set of food standards with Singapore Standards Council which may take 2-3 years to implement. On the same note, the Straits Times has reported that shopping malls and hotels will need to report waste and recycling data to the National Environment Agency (NEA) from next year. They must state the weight of waste discarded and that channelled for reuse and recycling, broken down by type, such as paper, metals and food. Their reports must reach the agency by the first quarter of next year, and also they would have to submit their waste reduction plans.
