The wooly Mangalica pig that has been named the “Kobe Beef of Pork” made its debut in Singapore during the recent Food & Hotel Asia. The Mangalica is declared a National Treasure by the Hungarian Parliament as it is part of the country’s cultural and gastronomic heritage, however the breed can only be sustained by the demand for it, thus the concept is termed as ‘saving by eating’. With the fat percentage of the meat well over 50%, the Mangalica has more than double the marbling of the average pork, but 12-16% less saturated fatty acids that is bad for health. Mangalica meat products are distributed by Dawood Exports and Huber’s Butchery, and available at major supermarkets.
