A month after the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2019, the announcement of next year's edition proclaiming where they will be holding next year's fiesta of events has already set tongues a-wagging: Flanders, Belgium, with the awards ceremony held in the city of Antwerp.
Why Flanders? For one thing, the city of Antwerp boasts a fascinating blend of history and modernity, tradition and innovation, and is renowned not only for its art and architecture, but for design, fashion, jewellery and, of course, stellar food and drink.
William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, comments on the move to Flanders, saying, “The area boasts high quality produce, excellent restaurants and discerning palates. We look forward to bringing the global food community together again next year and helping many to discover this European culinary hotspot.”
Flanders is home to the world famous fries or Frieten in Flemish as well as seafood, pastries and chocolates. It's also the country of three restaurants in the 2019 rankings: Peter Goossens’ Hof van Cleve in Kruishoutem at No.43 and two on this year's extended list, Nick Bril’s The Jane in Antwerp at No. 99 and Kobe Desramault’s Chambre Séparée in Ghent as a new entry at No.111.
The World's 50 Best Restaurants will be staged the same week as the UNWTO World Forum on Food Gastronomy, hosted in Bruges of Flanders. "It will be a festive week, where we will show the world that in Flanders you can enjoy great food on every table and on every counter” commented Ben Weyts, Flemish Minister of Tourism. The 50 Best programme will include a series of side events, including the #50BestTalks discussion – some of which will be open to the public.
