Best tea salons in Paris: Mariage Frères

Everything began in 1660, when the first members of the Mariage family were asked by King Louis XIV to be responsible for importing exotic food like vanilla, cocoa, spices, and tea, to the royal court of France. Later generations decided to set up their own wholesale shop in 1854. In the 1980s, Mariage Frères (frères being the French word for ‘brothers’) opened their first tea houses.

“We are the very first tea provider in Japan,” says Charly Chareyron, F&B Director. “We have more than eleven shops there, with four restaurants.” It is apparent that the Japanese have an appreciation for the French way of living.

The gourmet tea company will also be opening in London next year. “The British are used to tea,” says Chareyron. “But we would like to introduce another way to drink tea.” Perhaps one day we’ll find ourselves enjoying tea not just with afternoon tea, but also breakfast, lunch, pre-theatre, and dinner!
