From Fremantle’s B-Shed jetty, Rottnest Island is a 25-minute ferry ride away. In 1696, Dutch sailors mistook the island’s population of quokkas for giant rats, and named the island Rotte Nest (Rat Nest). In fact, quokkas belong to the same family as kangaroos, and are herbivorous and nocturnal.
Things to do on
Rottnest Island:
1) Hop on the Island Explorer bus and enjoy the stunning blues and greens of the water at Porpoise Bay and Little Salmon Bay, where you can also snorkel.
2) Rent a surf board and ride the waves at Strickland Bay.
3) Head to Karma Day Spa for an after-sun treatment of green tea, water lily, and chamomile.
4) Check out the island’s gift shop and take home a stuffed baby quokka for a keepsake.
5) Take a selfie with a quokka. Google ‘quokka selfie’ for ideas. You’ll see how quokkas have gotten a name for themselves as the world’s happiest animal.
