Expired Food Given New Lease Of Life Former president of Trader Joe’s, Doug Rauch, has a bold business plan to stop food wastage. It is estimated that up to forty percent of food produced in the US is wasted, equivalent to $165million being thrown away. The reason for this is the policies that supermarkets have of throwing away food past the expiration date on their labels. However, what most people do not know is that these dates on their labels are mostly inaccurate and given arbitrarily. A lot of food is still good for consumption after the assigned expiration date. Rauch is opening a store called The Daily Table which will be part grocery, part café, exclusively selling food items that have passed their expiration date and lower, more affordable prices. He hopes this will encourage people, especially the underprivileged to eat more healthily. He hopes that after initial funding, The Daily Table will become a self-sustaining business.
