Plant compounds called flavonoids normally found in red wine have been found to lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes in people. The specific substances called flavones and anthocyanin are linked to lower insulin resistance and better blood sugar control. A large scale test was done on 2000 healthy women in the UK, blood samples were taken and they were quizzed on their dietary habits. Those who consumed foods containing these flavonoids such as red wine, berries and grapes were found to have lower blood sugar levels as compared to those who did not. A high blood sugar level is a sign of Type 2 diabetes. Additionally, the women who consumed more flavonoids had improved levels of a protein that helps control blood sugar concentration
