Japanese Frozen Food Fears

After facing the double tsunami and radiation disaster in 2011, Japan has tried hard to convince other countries that its exported food products are radiation free. Recently, however, in a scandal that has left over 300 people sick, pesticide-contaminated frozen food has been the problem. Frozen food produced by a subsidiary of Maruha Nichiro Holdings, Japan’s largest seafood firm, has been revealed to be contaminated by the pesticide malathion, used to kill aphids in corn and rice fields. This has triggered a nation-wide recall of 6.4million potentially tainted products. This is certainly a big blow to the country, which is trying to rebuild consumer confidence in their products following fears of radiation tainted food products. That being said Japan generally still holds very high food standards and remains a top destination for culinary adventurous tourists.
