Last week’s news was on cloned meat and now, genetically altered food. This was a scientific breakthrough in that plants could take on genetic traits transported through DNA of bacteria. In short, scientists are now able to produce plants by genetically altering bacteria, boosting the agriculture industry. This could solve problems where countries are facing food shortages and good news for farmers where harvest may decrease due to the unpredictable weather. However, this piece of news is not seen as a positive one to many who are concerned with the safety of such food products with unknowns and require further tests before it is made available to the market. Especially so for Europe where genetically modified foods and ingredients are generally not allowed to be sold to humans. Unlike America, where such food products are common in stores. Should we open up to such food products in helping the agriculture industry?
