The concept of “Military Hotels” goes back to World War II, when some hotels were specifically designated for military personnel, as their menu consisted of meat for them. Thus, the name of “Military Hotel” was used for hotels and restaurants that contain meat on their menu. One of the pioneer “Military Hotels” was Velu Military Hotel, that started in 1955 and is still a crowd favourite for regulars and people who are looking for genuine food from Chennai. Sadly, Velu Military Hotel, is one of the few who retained this branding, while most hotels who serves meat are called “Chettinad Hotels”now, as “Military Hotels” are dwindling in Chennai.
