Indonesian Food Guru Heads To Ubud If you are heading to Ubud in late 2016, don’t miss out the opening of Manisan Restaurant, helmed by Chef William Wongso, who is no stranger to the culinary scene. The famous restaurateur and TV personality was invited by Alaya Hotels’ owners to set the stage for an all new Indonesian dining experience. The 69-year-old East Javanese began travelling extensively to put Indonesian food on the world map, his efforts garnering him accolades including an award from Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism. In 2008, Indonesian Vice-President Jusuf Kalla awarded Wongso the Professional Certification Authority (BNSP) for his dedication to culinary vocational education. On October 26, 2015 he and his team of young Indonesian chefs were asked to join President Jokowi’s official entourage on a state visit to Washington to visit President Obama. Chef Wongso was tasked to painstakingly ensure the multi course Indonesian banquet, held at the US Chamber of Commerce with President Jokowi as the guest of honor, paying homage to the country’s proud gastronomic traditions.

Mr Wongso’s efforts to change the perception of Indonesian cuisine was such a success that in 2013 Chef Wongso was invited by Singapore’s KF Seetoh and American TV personaility, Anthony Bourdain (Kitchen Confidential), to be part of a panel at the first ever World Street Food Congress in Singapore. As for the menus in the new 124-seat “culinary theatre”, some mainstream food traditions from places like Minangkabau and Bandung and other more esoteric dishes from cities such as Pontianak and Ambon will make an appearance.
