Singaporean Lands Second in Battle of World's Best Sushi Chefs For months, 186 participants competed to reach the finals of the inaugural Global Sushi Challenge, with just 14 remaining for the final showdown in Tokyo. They were the winners of their respective country challenges held from May to October this year.

“I feel like this is a very good opportunity for me to improve myself and can move forward in my career,” said Chef Damien Tan King Meng of Hide Yamamoto, Singapore’s representative at the Challenge.

After meticulous checks and tasting by a judging panel that includes master sushi chefs, the top three were announced: Toshi (third), Tan (second) and home favourite Jun Jibiki (first). Singapore's Chef Damien said he was not disappointed finishing as runner-up. “When they announced the result, a shock. After seeing other contestants, their job, I was thinking, I don’t have much of a chance to win.”
