The Harlan Family Launches 2018 Vintage Cabernet The Mascot

The Harlan Family Launches 2018 Vintage Cabernet The Mascot The Harlan Family of Napa Valley has launched its latest offering, the 2018 vintage of the Mascot, a full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon-based red wine. Embodying dark fruit, black tea and herbal notes, this vintage has an enigmatic softness that is anchored on the palate and pairs exceedingly well with a juicy prime rib as well as a hard, sharp cheese.

The tannins in this wine are subtle in its taste, reflecting the fact that it was picked in foggy and temperate September, preceded by a gentle summer.

The Mascot, a wine made from the younger vines of the Harlan family domain, is spearheaded by Will Harlan, son of Napa wine magnate Bill Harlan. The label began as a blend made for the Harlan family’s table and grown at Harlan Estate, which produces one of the most sought-after Bordeaux blends in Napa Valley; ‘BOND’, a portfolio of "Grand Cru" vineyards; and Promontory, located just south of the vineyards of Harlan Estate.

The Mascot is focused on making itself more accessible for the new generation of wine drinkers, with family member and co-owner Amanda Harlan (Will’s sister) actively using social media to invite fellow millennials and the like to, “learn more about our wines and to take consumers on a journey that is authentic to their experience and enjoyment”.

To stay eco-friendly, The Mascot also mentioned that it is constantly adapting and adjusting according to the needs of the vines, especially with regard to climate change. “At present, we prioritise listening to our vines to understand their needs best and engaging in biodynamic practices to stay eco-friendly,” said Harlan. Part of what makes The Mascot so special is indeed the expertise from the second generation of the team behind Harlan Estate as well as the label’s commitment to its ethos of being accessible and authentic.
