Battle of the Chefs Penang 2022 Sizzles and Delivers This Year!
With roots that start in 1988, the “Battle of the Chefs” is something that has been continuously held every two years in Penang. Organised by the Penang Chefs Association and endorsed by the World Association of Chefs Association of Chefs Societies, the event is one which has drawn the attention of chefs all over Penang.
This year, the competition attracted more than 600 participants from all specialty cuisines, who were judged over a competition period of three days. Held at Gurney Paragon Mall, the event was judged by a multitude of chefs from Singapore, Malaysia, and all over the region, with names such as Chef Dr. Rick Stephen, Chef Louis Tay Malaysian partner Chefonic Kitchen Equipment was the biggest partner of the event for 2022, along with Welbilt Asia who happened to be the sponsors of the competition ovens, using their Convotherm and Merrychef brands.
It's a part of Welbilt’s ethos to help push chefs to perform at their best, and thus perhaps a reason why Welbilt also sponsored three awards in the competition: Convotherm Roasted Duck In “Asian Style”, Convotherm Roasted Chicken In “Freestyle”, And Merrychef Seafood Panggang (Grilled) Set. All three winners of these categories walked away with cash prizes of RMB500, a trophy and certificate.
Through the grueling three days of competition, many were keen to see the event to the end, awaiting the prestigious prize of the Penang Governor’s Challenge Trophy, which is one of the biggest prizes ever to go to a chef. And the prize went to Chef Ashikhin Suhaimi, from Chenderoh Community College. The school itself was the recipient of another 5 awards attained by their students during the event.
