Get a taste of Klang with Feng Xiang Bak Kut Teh!
by Skye Yaw
There is no need to brave the soul-crushing jams at the Causeway to sample Malaysia’s herbal rendition of Bak Kut Teh. At Feng Xiang, you will be able to savour a variety of Klang’s best culinary offerings – ranging from fried porridge to herbal Bak Kut Teh, served in sizzling claypots.
The Malaysian-born founders found themselves missing a taste of home during Singapore’s circuit breaker and sought to replicate their hometown, Klang’s dishes by opening four Feng Xiang outlets in Singapore.
The signature dish, herbal Bak Kut Teh, is generously served with pork ribs, tofu puff, and beancurd skins drenched in a broth liberally infused with strong herbal notes and sweetness from boiling pork bones. The dry Bak Kut Teh, where pork ribs were braised in dried cuttlefish strips, dried chilli, and dark soy sauce is equally delectable and paired well with white rice.
The star of the show, however, has to be the Fried Porridge- cooked with a broth derived from dried cuttlefish and pork bones amongst other secret ingredients and fried over high heat for maximum smoky charred flavour over a wok. Generously topped with crispy shallots, customers are also able to customize their porridge (served in a claypot to ensure that it's piping hot) with their preferred protein of choice ranging from abalone, pork innards and fish.
Other equally delicious offerings that pair very well with the porridge were the crispy pork belly as well as the fried pig innards that are fried to perfection – making it a delightful contrast with the texture of the porridge -a must-order.
For those who are more health conscious yet love traditional dishes – Feng Xiang also boasts dishes like Braised Pig Trotter and Pork Trotters in Vinegar.
