The Last Straw: McDonald's Singapore Takes Straws Away For Their Cold Beverage Drinks
Here’s something really fun and interesting: McDonalds Singapore is pushing forth strawless lids from now on.
This comes as another move against plastic straws, which has been seen as a target of derision and hate amongst environmental advocates worldwide, after waste was found in the throats and stomachs of animals, including turtles.
It’s a decent move, especially since McDonald's Singapore has been working towards this for awhile now, along with other fast food joints such as KFC, as well as their sister branches in Malaysia. Yet, for some environmental advocates, some valid criticisms have arisen, such as how straws are being used as a scapegoat for the waste issues of bigger corporations, which have not been penalised for the amount of waste being pushed into the oceans, or for the amount of gases being produced. Plastic straws as well have been a tool for the disabled, who find plastic straws easier to bite and help them consume food without disintegrating too quickly after too much biting or cold liquids, and the straw ban is something that affects them strongly.
Still, considering that McDonald's Singapore is part of a giant corporation that has spent large amounts of money towards plastic use in their restaurants, it’s a nice effort to see them enact this in their Singapore branch.
