Ban Foreign Hawkers

Penang has taken a bold step in the hope of preserving local heritage. If the bill passes in 2015, all licensed street food hawkers in Penang will be tended by Penangites only. This is a strong move to protect their culinary legacy. The question is, how truly beneficial is it going to be for the locals? With the younger generation equipped with degrees and certificates, would they not prefer to work in comfortable offices than slogging in the hot sweaty kitchens? The parents themselves would not be keen with the idea too taking into account the money that they have spent on the children’s education. To read more, visit
